      Pickleball FAQ

      Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a smaller court with a perforated plastic ball (similar to a wiffle ball) and paddles.

      • Singles (1 vs 1)
      • Doubles (2 vs 2, the most popular format)
      • A paddle (lighter than a tennis racquet)
      • A pickleball (plastic ball with holes)
      • Court shoes with good grip

      Access to a pickleball court or a modified badminton/tennis court

      • The game starts with an underhand serve diagonally across the court.
      • The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed (called the “two-bounce rule”).
      • Only the serving side can score points.
      • Games are usually played to 11 points (win by 2).

      The kitchen is the non-volley zone (7 feet from the net on both sides). Players cannot volley (hit the ball out of the air) while standing inside the kitchen.

      • Only the serving team can score.
      • In doubles, the score is called as server’s score – receiver’s score – server number (1 or 2). Example: 4-2-1.
      • Standard games go to 11 points, win by 2. In tournaments, sometimes 15 or 21 points.

      Court shoes (similar to tennis shoes) are best, as they provide lateral support and reduce the risk of injury. Running shoes are not ideal.
