      Football (Soccer) FAQ

Football, also known as soccer, is the world’s most popular sport. It is played between two teams of 11 players each, with the objective of scoring goals by getting the ball into the opponent’s net without using hands or arms (except the goalkeeper).

Each team fields 11 players: 10 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper. Teams may also have substitutes who can replace players during the match.

A standard match lasts 90 minutes, divided into two halves of 45 minutes each, with a 15-minute halftime break. Extra time and penalties may be used in knockout competitions.

      • Football boots/cleats
      • Shin guards
      • Goalposts and net
      • Jersey, shorts, and socks

A goal is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line between the posts and under the crossbar, as long as no rules are broken (like handball).

      • Players (except the goalkeeper inside their penalty area) cannot touch the ball with hands/arms.
      • Offside rule prevents attackers from waiting near the opponent’s goal.
      • Fouls and misconduct (e.g., tripping, holding, dangerous play) are penalized with free kicks, penalties, or cards.
      • The team with the most goals at full time wins.

A player is offside if they are closer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-last defender at the moment the ball is played to them, unless they are in their own half or receive the ball directly from certain restarts (goal kick, throw-in, corner).

      • Goalkeeper – defends the goal.
      • Defenders – protect their half and stop attacks.
      • Midfielders – control play, pass, defend, and attack.
      • Forwards/Strikers – mainly score goals.
